National Rare Donor Registry – A person with a blood type that occurs in only 1:15,000 is considered a rare donor. When rare blood types are discovered, an individual’s name is placed on a national registry in Washington D.C. (with the donor’s permission). When a patient has a rare blood type, a compatible unit of blood can be located anywhere in the United States or the world.
Autologous Donations – when appropriate, individuals are encouraged to donate their own blood for any scheduled, elective surgery. Our region offers more than a dozen convenient locations for this service. To schedule your blood donation for your surgery, please call 1-800-589-8129.
Directed Donations – Having family members or friends donate blood for a specific individual is available through this program upon the direction of the patient’s physician. For more information please call 1-800-589-8129.
Reference Laboratory – Skilled technicians are available to hospitals 24 hours a day to find compatible units of blood for their patients. This laboratory staff also performs hospital in-services.
